Alice's Becomes Kathy May's Lakeview Cafe

The Huntington Beach City Council voted on August 15, 2011 to approve the renovation of Alice's Breakfast in the Park, and the opening of a new, similar business called Kathy May's Lakeview Cafe.

The Huntington Beach City Council has approved the selection of long-time restaurateur Kathy May to be the new tenant at the former Alice's Breakfast in the Park at Lake Huntington, 6622 Lakeview Drive.

Kathy May's Lakeview Cafe should open in early 2012 after several renovations, including large windows all across the front, allowing customers to watch the beautiful wildlife and lake; a two-part patio, one fenced in with plexiglass, the other out by the lake; a second bathroom; a new walk-in refrigerator; air conditioning, heating plus much more.

The 2,500-square-foot building also will have a Formal Dining Room and Coffee Shop Dining Room. People will see an electric fireplace upon entering the facility, which, for the first time, is expected to also take credit and debit cards.

Kathy May, a veteran of more than 33 years in the restaurant business, including being General Manager at Bob's Big Boy and current owner of Kathy May's at 7320 Center Avenue, also operates HB Outdoor BBQ & Snacks at the Sports Complex. She has to move to make room for a large residential and commercial development at the Center Avenue site across from Golden West College.

"I'm really looking forward to having a much better view," said the excited lady, whose daughter, April, and husband Charlie, also work at the restaurant. "I'll be looking out at a spectacular lake instead of a fast-food eatery."

The HB resident said they will move much of the equipment from Center Ave. to the new site over a couple week period in possibly January or February.

"We're going to be having our same good food menu and keeping part of Alice's great tradition alive by offering her daughter Mary Beth Gustafson's legendary Cinnamon Rolls."

"I'm thrilled that Kathy's new cafe is coming to Lake Huntington," said Catherine Wong, who has been taking her four grandchildren to the Center Ave. eatery every Saturday since it opened over 12 years ago. "It will be delicious food and a fun place to go for a sensational view."

Like the site's original proprietor, sweet Alice Gustafson, Kathy is very friendly and customer-focused. She said they plan on being open from 6:30am to 9:00pm every day. You can log on to her new website: or call at her current number, (714) 379-6255, to learn more. Welcome to Central Park, Kathy!
