This plaque is located to the left of the entrance to
Shipley Nature Center in Central Park, Huntington Beach, California.
Here is what it says:
|
| Dr. Donald Devries Shipley, a 35 year Huntington
Beach resident, was a "Connecticut Yankee" who chose to make Huntington
Beach his home. He was born in Stamford, Connecticut, October 26, 1913
and died in Huntington Beach on September 14, 1989. An outstanding
educator, conservationist, world traveler and humanitarian, he was a
Professor of Biology at California State University Long Beach from
1953-1976 and served on the Huntington Beach City Council from
1964-1976, 4 years as Mayor. He dedicated his life to improve the
quality of life for those of us living and for future citizens. The
Huntington Beach Rotary Club dedicates this plaque in the memory of Dr.
Shipley who wrote:
"We sleepwalk through our environment. Most of us are
totally unaware of how little of our natural environment now remains in
coastal Southern California. I submit that man may need some natural
areas in his human environment much more than does our depleted
wildlife."
