Huntington Beach Resident Wrote Songs the World Remembers

img

World-renowned'Huntington Beach composer, trombonist, arranger and conductor, Frank Comstock, 90, passed away in May 2013, but his amazing talents and countless songs will keep people smiling for years to come. Not everyone knew him well, though Doris Day stood side-by-side for many years with the man who wrote tunes helping launch her career.

(Day, 89, recently won a 2014 Guinness record for longest female career, beating out the likes of Betty White. Day said she lied about her age as a youngster so she could land singing gigs with big bands.) Nearly three-quarters of the songs Comstock wrote weren't even credited to his name but when you hear the Electrical Light Parade at Disneyland, or By the Light of the Silvery Moon, think FRANK COMSTOCK! He was the master of recognizable tunes that can evoke joy, melancholy, romance, adventure...whatever.

Among the long list of popular tunes Comstock created: The Disneyland Main Street Electrical Parade Christmas parades (all Disney parks) Walt Disney World Candlelight Services Young At Heart with Doris Day and Frank Sinatra The Music Man with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones Rocky and His Friends Adam-12 (all 112 episodes) Dragnet (1967, 4 seasons) Happy Days (4 seasons) Laverne and Shirley (4 seasons) Ensign O'Toole McHale's Navy F-Troop The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour Starlift with Doris Day I'll See You In My Dreams with Doris Day and Danny Thomas On Moonlight Bay with Doris Day and Gordon MacRae By the Light Of the Silvery Moon with 'Doris Day and Gordon MacRae Room for One More with Cary Grant The Desert Song with Gordon MacRae and Kathryn Grayson Man With the Gun with Robert Mitchum The Jazz Singer with Danny Thomas The Eddie Cantor Story with Keefe Brasselle So This Is Love with Kathryn Grayson and Merv Griffin Calamity Jane with Doris Day and Howard Keel April In Paris with Doris Day and Ray Bolger 3 Sailors and A Girl with Jane Powell and Merv Griffin About Facewith 'Gordon MacRae and Eddie Bracken This Woman Is Dangerous with Joan Crawford Lucky Me with Doris Day and Phil Silvers Young At Heart with Doris Day and Frank Sinatra The Music Man with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones Oh Dad, Poor Dad with Rosalind Russell The Last of the Secret Agents with Marty Allen and Steve Rossi The Swinger with Ann-Margret The Family Jewels with Jerry Lewis Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis The Fortune Cookie 'withJack Lemmon and Walter Matthau Thoroughly Modern Millie with Julie Andrews Valley of the Dolls with Patty Duke and Susan Hayward Finian's Rainbow with Fred Astaire and Petula Clark Hello, Dolly! with Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthau Pete Kelly's Blues The D.A.'s Man Temple Houston The Bob Hope Show with Les Brown and His Band of Renown (15 years) The Judy Garland Show The Andy Williams Show The Carol Burnett Show The Jimmie Rodgers Show
