Idaho State University Places at Huntington Beach Spring Volleyball Tournament

Yocopis and Randall place second, Hurst and Maughan finish third

April 26, 2005 College Sports News Story

Huntington, CA--Idaho State's volleyball returnees recently had a successful showing at the Huntington Beach Bud Light Six Pack Open in Huntington, California April 23. ISU's duo of Felice Yocopis and Nikki Randall placed second at the tournament, while Katie Hurst and Karli Maughan teamed up to finish third.

"The Huntington Beach tournament was a great experience for our team," said ISU head coach Mike Welch. "Playing the beach game was a great compliment to the training we have been doing this spring with our team. They have greatly improved in their ball control skills, are quicker in pursuing balls defensively, and have become very smart attackers."

Yocopis and Randall cruised through pool play with a perfect 4-0 record, including a win over eventual champions Morgan Beck and Kari Pestolesi. Hurst and Maughan finished pool play with a 2-2 record, finishing third to advance to the play-offs.

The Yocopis/Randall duo lost in the championship match to the Beck/Pestolesi team to finish second, while ISU's Hurst/Maughan team lost in the semifinals to Yocopis and Randall to place third at the tournament.

"I am proud of the ISU players for finishing 2nd and 3rd place in the Huntington Beach tournament," Welch said. "They all have opened up new dimensions in their game."

ISU returning setter Lisa Bushman attended the tournament, but did not participate due to injury. Bushman is expected to make a full recovery by mid-summer.
