World class surfers, skateboarders, inline skaters and BMX cyclists competed this past week in Huntington Beach, with the grand finale on  August 5. Never mind a recently injured arm: Rob Machado of Cardiff took his 10th and last wave with so much gusto, it put him in first place in the U.S. Open Men's competition, overcoming Brazil's Marcelo Nunes. Machado won $10,000 with a score of 22.96. Nunes won $5,000 and had 22.84.  Machado won the U.S. Open in 1995 when he beat Kelly Slater.  Reigning champ, Sunny Garcia was eliminated in the quarter finals when called for blocking Pat O'Connell on a superior left hander. Over 250,000 people attended the Sunday event.
