May's youthful scene in Huntington Beach 2009 portrays the Real HB. Not upscale in the traditional sense, this is the HB that relies on the teen and 21+ biz. Shopping is contemporary, casual and beach-oriented. Dining is casual, contemporary to traditional, and includes a mix of pizza, hot dogs, turkey sandwiches, sushi, steaks and everything in between. As you can see from the photo above, the dress code for most stores and restaurants is "shoes & shirt".

May 2009 is the start of the summer season. It's when tourists begin booking hotel rooms, and the beaches begin to buzz with a hum. Mother's Day gets people out, and Memorial Day in May provides a Monday off for many to wander and look for fun.

In the picture above you'll notice the attire is lightweight and casual. You'll see plenty of blue jeans, tanks tops, tees, ball caps and tennis shoes or sandals.  One of the top activities for local residents and tourists is to wander along Main Street near the beach and shop at stores like Huntington Surf & Sport with lively window displays by Quiksilver, Stussy, and other contemporary clothing and sports gear names.

A surf tribute statue stands facing Pacific Coast Highway in front of Huntington Surf & Sport, a full size bronze statue of Duke Kahanamoku. Huntington Beach surfers dispute Duke's role in mainland surfing as some claim Duke was but one ambassador to the mainland from Hawaii. Regardless of the stories of a legend, tourists flock in front of the statue to have a picture taken with him, and to enjoy hand and footprints left in the cement by international surf legends honored by this store for their accomplishments in surfing. Huntington Surf & Sport is owned by a surfing family that excels in the sport, sponsors surfing teams, sells surf clothing, boards and accessories, and generally loves surfing.

On your visit to Huntington Beach, be sure to stop at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Main Street to take a look at this ode to surfing.
