February
2009 calendar for Huntington Beach features a bit of
the whimsical, though very real cultural flavor that
this youthful seaside city contains. A skateboarder
moves along Pier Plaza, having just climbed the
steps from the beach to the promenade above.
Arriving on the green tile surface, the board takes
an every so slight bump-bump ride as the young guy
with his designer hat heads for home somewhere.
Sporting a designer backpack slung over his left,
bare shoulder, partially obstructing view of a
colorful tattoo, this is your typical, blonde-haired
beach boy. Casual, confident, and the world at his
beckoning, the Southern California beach culture
offers so many sports and outdoor opportunities in
every season, including what Midwest and Easterners
consider winter.
Shown in the
photo is Main Street's pier promenade building, one
of the first large complexes built in downtown after
the old buildings were torn down. In this building
is nearly a city of food, shopping and businesses.
For dining, you'll find Fred's Mexican Cafe,
Gallaghers Pub & Grill, Silvera's Steak House, Spark
Woodfire Grill, Black Bull Chop House, Pacific Coast
Hotdogs, Subway, Java Point, and Sweetie. That's a
whopping eight places in one building! There's a
public parking garge, offices for Huntington Surf &
Sport and Surfline, as well as other office space,
and lots of shopping to enjoy.
In February
look for Sweetheart Packages at the hotels, and
during this year of the City of Huntington Beach
Centennial (100) year celebration, there's a special
event with a time capsule filled with memories to be
deposited for safe keeping to dig out at some later
date so tourists and locals can look back and get a
glimpse of things such as the picture above, showing
how life was in 2009 in Surf City. |
