Wet Electric Rave at Huntington State Beach September 14, 2013
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIF.–California State Parks - Huntington State Beach is the location for a ticketed RAVE party on the beach September 14, 2013, with water slides, dozens of DJs spinning tunes and liquor sold to a 21+ crowd only. It is being produced by Activated Events and is called Wet Electric Rave (wet-electric.com).
This adult beach party is raising the ire of locals who are just assessing the damage and police who are still looking for suspects in the July 28 riot in downtown Huntington Beach.
The RAVE’s promotional materials list Surfrider Foundation as beneficiary. According to a local chapter of the non-profit organization, they have been a past beneficiary but did not approve their name to be used in the upcoming event. They say they have asked Activated Events to remove their name from promotions.
Many are questioning the process in which such an event was approved. The California Coastal Commission regulations & guidelines specify that events on public beaches be open free to the public. However, there apparently are clauses that allow for events such as a RAVE party with private ticketing and liquor sold to adults on the beach. Part of the discussion involves the approval process which allowed US Open of Surfing to grow to its 2013 configuration featuring multiple arenas with a variety of sports, and free concerts on the beach. If the riot hadn’t occurred at the end of the US Open of Surfing 2013, the planned RAVE Party may not have come under as much scrutiny.
The City of Huntington Beach created a task force which met on Friday, August 2, 2013, to discuss problems in downtown Huntington Beach, which has the highest concentration of liquor serving establishments in the state. News of the Wet Electric RAVE, however, took over the discussion during the meeting. There’s more to come on this story!
