Huntington Beach Tree Society Plants Trees for Arbor Day 2011

The tireless volunteers of the HB Tree Society such as Jean Nagy and Shirley Knopf were out on the medium strip of Main Street on March 15, 2011, planting four beautiful camphor trees in celebration of California’s Arbor Week and Huntington Beach’s Tree City Communities USA status. Huntington Beach is one of over 150 cities in California that adheres to the guidelines of the national organization, thus receiving “tree city” status.

The Huntington Beach Tree Society and the City’s Tree Maintenance program held a  tree planting and dedication at Main Street and Adams Avenue. The giant tree character, poems about trees and inscribed meaningful words on leaves that were placed in the dirt with the trees’ roots all offered homage to the benefits of trees.  The society and city began planting Camphor trees along several blocks on the Main Street medians approx. four years ago. Tuesday’s Arbor Week ceremony marked the final phase of the tree plantings of trees that are known to be quite expensive, and beautiful to look at as they mature. The City and society chose Camphors for the attractive shady cover they provide for the median, much appreciated during the annual 4th of July Parade.  The Tree Society has planted more than 5,000 trees at parks, schools, and other sites around Huntington Beach. If you want to be a part of their tree planting events, visit hbtrees.org.  The organizations constantly seek volunteers, and  works with Scouts and the community, and sometimes even offers drawings for prizes during their events.
